Mission:

To advocate, plan, implement, and monitor programs in health, education, employment, and social services which promote longevity, independence, dignity and choice for our senior citizens. The Office on Aging also administers the Aging and Disability Resource Center, a one-stop shop resource center, designed to assist seniors, persons with disabilities 18 years of age and older, and family caregivers navigate the long-term services and supports system.

Complete Housing Applications at DCOA

DC Housing Authority (DCHA) Applications can now be completed at the D.C. Office on Aging for senior citizens and persons living with disabilities.  DCOA personnel have been trained and authorized by DCHA to complete applications for residents interested in subsidized housing.   Please be advised that April 12 is the deadline for submission of all new applications until further notice. Senior Transportation RFA

The April 19 deadline for the Senior Service Transportation RFA is approaching.  DCOA is seeking an entity to operate the Washington Elderly Handicapped Transportation Service.  For more information, contact Aurora Delespin-Jones, Program Analyst or Brenda L. Turner, Program and Grants Manager at 202-724-8821.  The RFA is available for review at www.dcoa.dc.gov.


Beware of Lottery Scams

A good rule to follow is if you have won money, you shouldn't have to pay money to receive it.  Too many senior citizens are becoming victims of a  Jamaican Lottery Scam as reported on the Today Show and other news broadcasts in recent months.  One of the latest victims is a resident of the Baltimore area who lost $400,000 in the scam.  View this report to find out more.


Apply for Technical Assistance

Community based organizations providing services to senior citizens and persons living with disabilities can apply for technical assistance.  The Administration for Community Living announces the opportunity to assist organizations with their business acumen through a learning collaborative and targeted technical assistance related to business acumen.  The deadline for applications is March 29.  Find out more here.


Register for Smart911, Every Second Counts

Register for Smart911 today and provide first responders with the information they need to know about illnesses, allergies and other disabilities necessary to treat persons requiring emergency assistance in your household.  Social workers can also assist their clients with registering to ensure they remain safe during emergencies.  For more information visit smart911.com.
