Mission

To advocate, plan, implement, and monitor programs in health, education, employment, and social services which promote longevity, independence, dignity and choice for our senior citizens. The Office on Aging also administers the Aging and Disability Resource Center, a one-stop shop resource center, designed to assist seniors, persons with disabilities 18 years of age and older, and family caregivers navigate the long-term services and supports system.

Director Thompson featured on Senior Corner

D.C. Office on Aging (DCOA) Executive Director John M. Thompson, Ph.D. was interviewed today on Senior Corner on Spirit 1340 AM, WYCB.  During the segment, Dr. Thompson discussed programs and services offered by DCOA, the Mayor’s New Community Living Strategic Plan, the Ambassador Program and volunteer opportunities available through the DCOA.  Persons who have free time and are interested in giving back to the community through volunteering should contact Tiffany Holodnak at 202-724-5622 for more information.


MPD and DCOA Deliver Holiday Treats to Seniors

Holiday Treats 2012

The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and the DCOA delivered holiday treats to exceptional seniors and those in need of holiday cheer on December 24.  Five seniors were treated to these holiday creations delivered by MPD Chief Diane Groomes and Dr. Thompson.  Treats were delivered to Raymond Ball, Johnnie Cain, Maureen Gehrig Cook, Elizabeth Hicks and Willie Nelson.

Serve DC Offers Emergency Preparedness Training

We all have a role to play in ensuring the safety of our families and community. In 95 percent of emergencies, a victim or bystander provides the first immediate assistance on the scene. Do you have the skills and information necessary to keep yourself and your family as safe as possible? Serve DC – The Mayor’s Office on Volunteerism provides anyone who lives, works or congregates in the District of Columbia with free emergency preparedness training, including the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program, which educates citizens about the hazards most likely to a­ffect their community and provides basic disaster response training, including: fire safety, first aid, search and rescue, terrorism, and more. The Cleveland Park Village (CPV) seeks a high energy, well organized, experienced and caring individual as its founding executive director to begin by March 1, 2013. CPV is a non profit member service organization committed to helping senior neighbors remain in their homes through the practical help provided by neighborhood volunteers. Caregivers can take advantage of the next DC Caregivers Online Chat at Noon scheduled for Tuesday, January 8.  Chats are designed to provide resources, tips and other information to assist persons caring for older adults informally.
