Family Forever

10 Children to Find Forever Families on Weld County Adoption Day

November is National Adoption Month. In recognition, the Weld County Board of Commissioners will proclaim Friday, November 22nd as Weld County Adoption Day (November 23rd is National Adoption Day). This event is focused on raising awareness of children in foster care who are waiting to be adopted, recognizing the importance of giving children and youth safe, loving and permanent families and encouraging individuals to make a powerful difference in the life of a child or teen through adoption.

Each year, the 19th Judicial District sets aside an entire day to finalize adoptions and celebrate with families. On this memorable day, the courtroom of the Weld County Court House will be filled with stuffed animals, decorations and celebratory treats. Children can pick out their own stuffed animal and enjoy a special day dedicated to becoming an official and forever member of their family.  This year the Weld County Department of Human Services (DHS) is expecting to finalize the adoptions of 10 children from the child welfare system.

Currently, there are more than 40 children in Weld County custody who are waiting for adoption, and more than 123,000 children waiting nationwide. Between 2000 and 2018, DHS finalized over 550 adoptions of children from the child welfare system. To date, the adoption dreams of more than 70,000 children in foster care have come true as a part of National Adoption Day events.

To help promote family stability and healthy relationships, DHS provides post-permanency support services through our Family Forever Program.  This program is available to all families who have adopted within Weld County regardless of where they currently live, as well as to families who have adopted elsewhere and live in Weld County. For more information about the Family Forever Program, please contact (970) 400-6707 or email HS-PostAdoptionSupport@weldgov.com.

Socks

United Way of Weld County Warm Toes Sock Drive kicks off in December

United Way of Weld County wants to make sure no one in Weld County goes without warm socks for the winter. According to the Mayo Clinic, in cold enough conditions, frostbite can occur in 30 minutes or less. Warm, well-fitting socks can prevent this for many people.

With your help, we can provide a pair of warm socks to those in need. Join us this December for our sixth annual Warm Toes Sock Drive. Donations of new socks will be collected at various sites throughout Weld County. Faith-based locations that collected socks last year were:  Christ Community Church and First Christian Church in Greeley.

Agencies who received socks last year were: Cold Weather Shelter, Sunrise Mobile Outreach, North Colorado Health Alliance, Frontier House, Point in Time Count, Soccer Without Borders, Veterans Services, NRBH - Recovery Support Services, Weld Project Connect, Plaza del Milagro Head Start and Greeley-Evans School District 6.

If your church, organization or business would like to provide a location for the sock drive, please contact United Way of Weld County volunteer engagement coordinator Nicole Quinn at (970) 304-6198 or nicole@unitedway-weld.org.
