The Honorable George L. Brown (1926 - 2006) has a life story that begs to be told. He was a trailblazer in every sense of the word, becoming the first African American Colorado State Representative, State Senator and Lieutenant Governor. He opened the door for so many, ensuring that young Black Coloradoans could see themselves holding public office, becoming a news editor and more.
Video interviews of Brown’s storied history from his own perspective can be found through The HistoryMakers, a nonprofit digital repository that shares the untold personal stories of both well-known and unsung African Americans for a more inclusive record of American history. In celebration of Black History Month, we’re sharing excerpts from his interviews detailing his career milestones in Colorado.
