DISTRICT 5 NEWSLETTER |AUG. 1

Protecting, Restoring, and Expanding Access to the Outdoors

Cindy

From the riverbanks in Auburn to the trails of the High Sierra, we are fortunate to call some of California’s most cherished outdoor spaces home. This summer, I’ve been inspired by the collaborative efforts across District 5 that are helping to preserve and expand access to the outdoors, while also improving public safety and land stewardship.

Last month, I joined a variety of local, state, and nonprofit leaders for the second annual Placer County Forestry Tour, hosted by Placer Resource Conservation District. The tour highlighted three active projects at the 40 Acre Conservation League property in Nyack, CAL FIRE’s Emigrant Gap Demonstration State Forest, and Sugar Bowl Resort. Each stop reflected the power of collaboration, bringing together landowners, public agencies, and partners to reduce wildfire risk and improve safe, sustainable recreation. These efforts range from fuels reduction and improved snow park access to trail enhancements and the early planning for a new nature center.

That same spirit of partnership is behind two recent efforts now moving forward in our region. After decades of uncertainty about who should take responsibility, a group of constituents brought their concerns to our office about the large concrete and steel debris that has remained in the North Fork American River since the Highway 49 bridge collapse in 1964. With support from then-State Senator Brian Dahle and then-Assembly Member Megan Dahle, who now serves as State Senator for that district, we were able to help secure $8 million in state funding and the County has stepped in to lead the effort. Over time, the site has become a popular spot for swimming and boating, but the presence of hidden rebar and other submerged hazards has posed serious safety risks as well as environmental disturbance in a pristine river. The County has reached an agreement on pricing with the contractor and is now awaiting two construction-related permits from state and federal agencies. If those approvals come through in time, the debris removal project could begin as soon as late August or early September. This long-awaited work will not only improve safety but also restore access to one of the most iconic recreation areas in the county. Read more about it here

Additionally, we’ve taken an important step toward preserving public access to the Bear River Fishing Access Area near Colfax. This site is one of the only public access points along this stretch of the Bear River, offering opportunities for fishing, hiking, swimming, and quiet nature enjoyment. After years of uncertainty about its future, the County has entered into a five-year agreement with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to operate and maintain the area. While services will remain limited in the short term, this agreement ensures the site will stay open to the public and allows us time to explore future investments or partnerships to improve amenities and long-term stewardship. I’ve heard from many residents over the years about how important this site is to their families, and I’m grateful we were able to preserve access while we plan for its future. You can view the agreement here

Finally, if you or someone you know is working on a local project that supports wildlife, habitat restoration, or outdoor education, Placer’s Fish and Game Commission is now accepting grant applications through September 3. More information is available here

Thank you to the many individuals, organizations, and public partners helping to protect and improve access to the places that make our region so special.

In service,
Cindy Gustafson
Placer County Supervisor, District 5
