North Lake Tahoe Newsletter - June 2025

Welcome to the June edition of the North Lake Tahoe newsletter,

I’m Lt. Don Nevins of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. Summer in Tahoe is the busiest season for us and I appreciate the opportunity to share how everyone can do their part to keep the Lake Tahoe Basin safe and beautiful.

As the weather warms, we get more activity on our beaches. That can mean more trash, more traffic and more opportunities for us to remind folks how to help protect this incredible place. We appreciate that locals and visitors have done a better job of cleaning up after themselves over the years, but there is still more we can do.

Over the next few months, we're stepping up education efforts across our area beaches to emphasize a few important rules everyone should know:

  • Pack out what you pack in — things like trash, food waste and foam coolers don’t just clutter the area, they can harm wildlife and the lake.
  • With few exceptions, alcohol is prohibited on county beaches, so please be mindful of the rules while enjoying the beach.
  • No dogs in the recreation areas or water, no smoking, no fires or barbecues and no glass containers.
  • Lastly, there are no lifeguards on duty, so we ask everyone to be extra cautious around the water.

We at the Sheriff’s Office absolutely love dogs and deeply understand how much joy they bring to their owners. However, the decision to prohibit dogs on county beaches is rooted in our commitment to ensuring public health and safety for everyone enjoying these shared spaces. Please do your part to take your dog to a designated dog-friendly area and check the posted signage at our beaches.

THE SUMMER AHEAD

As the Fourth of July approaches, I want you to know we’re out there doing our part to keep people safe this summer.

One of the most common issues we see in Tahoe is car-pedestrian accidents. If you are walking, biking or moving along the roadways, please cross at designated crosswalks and ensure vehicles are yielding before entering the roadway. And if you're driving, pay extra attention in congested areas to watch for pedestrians and yield at crosswalks.

Fireworks present an unreasonable danger for wildfire and are strictly prohibited in unincorporated Placer, which means all of North Lake Tahoe, and present an unreasonable danger for wildfire. We want to remind everyone that fireworks—even the ones you buy at the roadside, and stands, or those called safe and sane—are illegal and we ask the public to report the use of any illegal fireworks to the Sheriff’s Office. If folks want to enjoy fireworks, Tahoe City will hold an official fireworks show this year for the Fourth of July.

Similarly, public intoxications remain a big issue for us. Public intoxication often leads to all kinds of safety issues and is illegal across all of California, not just Tahoe. We want people to have a good time when they come here, but we ask they do it responsibly.

Finally, there’s no alcohol allowed on the Truckee River from July 1-6. That really stemmed from necessity, and it’s helped cut down on numerous public safety issues we were experiencing along the river during this busy holiday season. A similar ban goes into effect at the county-owned part of Chambers Landing from July 1-6.

Thanks for reading and we hope you enjoy your summer safely!

Construction underway on Fanny Bridge Replacement

This week, prep work began on the Fanny Bridge Replacement Project in Tahoe City with intermittent night lane closures to reduce traffic impacts. A full closure of the bridge is planned from Aug.11 through Nov. 3, with all traffic detoured via the state Route 89 Bypass. The new bridge will closely resemble the historic design while improving safety, accessibility and environmental sustainability. Local businesses remain open, and pedestrian access will be maintained during construction. LEARN MORE + READ FAQs

Placer working to prioritize pedestrian safety restriping

Due to winter weather and plow operations, many crosswalks in the North Lake Tahoe region are worn out. Placer County is working with Caltrans to ensure these crosswalks on state Route 28 remain a priority to be restriped in both Tahoe City and Kings Beach. County officials remind drivers to be aware of pedestrian crossings and take it slow in town centers.
