 On Dec. 5, 1957, the Auburn Journal revealed that the name of the new high school that would be built in the Penryn-Loomis region was to be “Del Oro.” Placer County High School student Patricia Ursenbach submitted the name. According to the Dec. 5, 1957, Auburn Journal: “Her suggestion was adopted from among some 100 suggestions submitted by students.”
Ursenbach’s suggestion was a play on the Spanish phrase “de oro,” which means “of gold.” She explained that gold was mined from nearby Secret Ravine and that the area was known for golden varieties of fruit.
Later, the school adopted the mascot of the “Golden Eagles” with the colors black and gold. Del Oro High School officially opened Sept. 28, 1959.
