On Sept. 12, 1935, Superintendent of Placer County Schools Portia Moss traveled to Tahoe City to establish a temporary school for the film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. MGM was producing a film in the area entitled “Rose Marie,” which was based on a popular musical of the same name from the 1920s. The film starred Reginal Owen, Gilda Gray and James (Jimmie) Stewart.
Several child actors were used in the film and MGM contacted Portia Moss to provide a teacher for the actors and for her office to maintain school records. Amy Laing was named as the teacher for the child actors. MGM paid the teacher’s salary and purchased all the materials needed for instruction.
“Rose Marie” was released Jan. 28, 1936, and was a box office success, grossing over $3.5 million. Portia Moss served as superintendent of schools in Placer County from 1927 through 1938.
