Placer County ranks second in the nation for the number of active Firewise Communities.
Firewise Communities are part of the Firewise USA program, which is a nationally recognized program that helps neighbors get organized and take action to decrease the risk of wildfires in their community.
Firewise Communities can save you money, too. The California Department of Insurance has worked with insurance companies to incentivize risk reduction initiatives through policy discounts. Several insurance agencies have started offering discounts for recognized Firewise Communities, including the California FAIR Plan, which provides discounts of up to 10%. On Aug. 4, 1923, hundreds of people gathered around the Roseville train depot just after midnight to observe the funeral train of former President Warren Harding. Harding died of cardiac arrest Aug. 2 in a San Francisco hotel room soon after being diagnosed with pneumonia.
The Aug. 8, 1923, Roseville Press-Tribune reported:
“Many who were near the rear of the car were able to catch a glimpse of the President’s bier, draped with a large United States flag and bedecked with flowers. At each corner of the coffin stood a guard of honor: two soldiers, a sailor and a marine.”
The train stopped in Roseville for about 10 minutes to change engines and crew before continuing east to Washington, D.C. His body laid at the United States Capitol Rotunda before being transported to his final resting place in Marion, Ohio.
