On Aug. 2, 1928, the Auburn Journal announced that the Lake Tahoe region made the shortlist for possible host sites for the 1932 Winter Olympics. Other locations being considered were Denver; Duluth, Minnesota; Bear Mountain, New York; and Lake Placid, New York. Ultimately, the International Olympic Committee selected Lake Placid. Had Lake Tahoe been selected, it would’ve been an all-California Olympic year as the 1932 Summer Olympics were previously held in Los Angeles.
On Aug. 2, 1932, Earl Crabbe, the athletic director for Placer High School, submitted his first report to the Auburn Journal from the aforementioned Los Angeles Summer Olympics. The Auburn Journal sent Crabbe to report on the Olympic Games.
His report opened with: “Record books are going to be thrown away at the end of these Olympic Games in Los Angeles, for it will take a whole new book to take care of the performances these men from all over the world are setting every day at the Olympic Stadium.”
