On June 12, 1948, President Harry S. Truman’s train stopped at the Roseville Depot where he addressed around 5,000 people from the caboose. This speech was part of his initial whistle stop tour that began on June 3, when he traveled through the western states.
Truman conceived of the idea himself because he told his staff that he wanted to meet and talk directly to the people. He also shunned prepared speeches and instead gave impromptu remarks at each stop. Before his whistle stop campaign began, most pundits believed Truman would lose the election and the polls supported this belief as he was down by double digits to his rival, Thomas Dewey, the governor of New York.
But the pollsters ignored the fact that as the president’s whistle stop campaign continued into the fall, the crowds grew larger. During his second campaign trip west, Truman again stopped to give remarks at the Roseville Depot in September.
On election night, Nov. 2, Truman went to bed at 9 p.m. and asked his advisors to wake him if there was any news. He was awakened with the news that he won at 4 a.m. on Nov. 3. He was the first candidate to lose a Gallup Poll but win the election.
