The dedication is in honor of Roseville native and Oakmont High School graduate U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Nicole Gee, who was killed in a terrorist attack in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Aug. 26, 2021.

The District Attorney’s Office plans to request a superior court judge stop the transient release of a sexually violent predator into Placer County. Tomorrow’s court proceeding is open to the public and will begin at 8:30 a.m. at Placer County Superior Court in Roseville. The Board of Supervisors is supporting the D.A. and voted Aug. 29 to send a letter of opposition to the court asking the judge to reconsider the transient release of William Stephenson without first securing housing. Public health
Placer County’s interim health officer, along with the Placer Mosquito and Vector Control District, are urging residents to prevent mosquito bites after the first human case of West Nile virus this season was reported in Roseville. Learn more
Land conservation
Placer County will contribute $910,000 toward the preservation of 1,169 acres in rural Lincoln, helping the county meet goals and objectives outlined in our open space and agricultural conservation programs.

Animal services
This week, Placer County Animal Services debuted two umbrella shade structures for the benefit of dogs, staff and volunteers. Funding for the structures was supported by generous donations from two local dog-lovers. Learn more & watch video

 We love stories about inept burglars and this one is no exception! On Aug. 28, 1937, Everett Smith broke into Lukens Hardware Store using an ax to shatter the window. He also used the ax to break the cash register, where he was able to steal $6. At some point during the robbery, he broke his ax handle and apparently cut himself. There was blood at the crime scene the following morning.
Everett Smith was eventually captured and charged with burglary, but the charge was later dismissed due to lack of evidence. He was, however, charged and convicted of petty theft for stealing a bottle of whiskey from another Auburn establishment.
On Sept. 30, 1938, Everett once again broke into Lukens Hardware Store, this time stealing a whopping $.37 and a handgun. He was caught brandishing the handgun in the Miner’s Café after the robbery and was arrested. The charges included burglary and illegal possession of a firearm as he was a convicted felon from a prior incident in Oklahoma. His decision to take the gun is what did him in. He was sentenced to Folsom Prison to serve three years but was paroled in 1940.
