Shop local & support our Placer County Businesses this holiday season

We are approaching a holiday season that will likely look different than holiday seasons in the past, but we can still tap into the holiday spirit to help our communities. One way to support your community is to focus on “shopping small” by making local small businesses your first stop for holiday items. Patronizing small businesses in your community will help strengthen the local economy and support your neighbors, and you will get the benefit of great local products and services.  The holidays give us the chance to reconnect with each other and every purchase at a small business, from a cup of coffee to a new TV, makes a difference.

Placer County’s small businesses are the backbone of our local economy. They not only add character to our communities and deliver the goods and services we need all year long, they also provide employment opportunities for our families and friends. In fact, small businesses provide two out of every three new job opportunities in our communities.  Supporting our small businesses helps us to build and maintain a strong economic foundation, which benefits all of us.

During this holiday season don’t forget to dine locally as well. Although we are all doing our best to navigate the state’s changing COVID-19 restrictions, we can still enjoy al fresco dining or grab takeout from our favorite restaurants while you are out shopping. And don’t forget many restaurants also offer gift cards, which are great to have on hand for yourself and to give to the people on your list! Let’s make sure we help support our small businesses throughout the holiday season and beyond.

If you own a small business, please be sure to take a look at programs and events being offered by the U.S. Small business Administration (SBA) and the Placer Business Resource Center (BRC). The Small Business Administration’s Sacramento District Office hosts a weekly webinar for small businesses on SBA resources in an interactive format. Participants can ask questions and learn about SBA’s resources, including loan programs, federal contracting programs, training opportunities, and business counseling services. Please visit the SBA calendar for more information.

The Placer Business Resource Center is also offering a wide array of programs and services for small businesses, including virtual workshops, one-on-one business advising, hiring events and permitting assistance. Please visit the Small Business Resource Center’s website for more information.

Finally, I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and happy holiday season. Although we are facing struggles right now, there is still much to be thankful for. I look forward to the day that we have moved past these trying times, and until then I continue to be grateful for all that we have, including our wonderful community.

Warm Regards,

Supervisor Jim Holmes
