Mayor for a Day Essay Contest |

If you were mayor for a day, what is one problem you would solve?
The 2026 Mayor for a Day essay contest is now open for submissions from Mountain View youth. The essay contest provides an opportunity for youth to learn about local government.
Contest Rules
- Open to elementary and middle school-aged Mountain View residents
- Maximum of 500 words per essay
- Only one entry per person
- One elementary AND one middle school-aged contestant will be selected by the Mayor.
- Winners will be recognized at the City Council meeting at Mountain View City Hall, 500 Castro St., on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
All entries are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9.

California Street Complete Street Project
Community Survey

The California Street Pilot Project was designed to enhance safety for bicycle, pedestrian, and car travel, eliminate fatal or severe injury crashes, and increase the number of sustainable trips on California Street between Showers Drive and Shoreline Boulevard. With construction of the Project complete, it is entering the evaluation phase. City staff is collecting data, including community feedback and traffic, bicycle, and pedestrian counts. Over the next month, the City is reaching out to hear from the community to assess the project’s results and determine if further adjustments are needed.
Residents can provide their feedback by taking a survey in the following languages:
The survey is intended for residents who live on and/or travel on California Street.
The evaluation results will be presented to the public and the Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee and Council Transportation Committee at meetings tentatively planned for late 2026 and early 2027.

Thompson Mini Park Second Community Meeting |

Thompson Mini Park is a proposed 0.43-acre park in the Monta Loma neighborhood located at 538 Thompson Ave. and 2231 W. Middlefield Road. The project will provide additional park and open space for everyday community use.
A second community meeting will be held in the Multi-Use Room at Monta Loma Elementary School. Staff will present conceptual layout alternatives based on the feedback received from the first meeting, request park naming ideas, and gather additional input.

Following the meeting, staff will present a recommended preferred concept and park naming recommendations to the Parks and Recreation Commission in December 2026 and to Council in spring 2027.

Mountain View Voters Will Decide on Measure F |
|
|
For the Nov. 3, 2026 General Municipal Election, Mountain View voters will consider Measure F. The measure would increase the City of Mountain View's existing Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) paid by hotel and short-term rental guests from the current rate of 10% to a new rate of up to 15%, which would generate up to $5,200,000 annually.
A TOT, sometimes referred to as a “Hotel Tax”, is an assessment charged to visitors who stay in local establishments. The assessment is on all per-room occupancies, including hotels, motels, and short-term rentals. If passed, Measure F will create a guaranteed source of local funding that, by law, cannot be taken by the State.

The City of Mountain View is recruiting to fill vacant positions on City advisory bodies. Apply to serve on one of the Council-appointed boards, commissions, or committees, and make a difference in the community and local government.
Volunteers can apply for any of the following:
- Bicycle/Pedestrian Advisory Committee
- Board of Library Trustees
- Downtown Committee (Downtown Property Owner/Business Representative)
- Environmental Planning Commission
- Human Relations Committee
- Parks and Recreation Commission
- Performing Arts Committee
