Santa Clara County Goes Door-to-Door to Collect Recalled Grapevine Plants |
|
|
Beginning this week, the County of Santa Clara Division of Agriculture is going door-to-door to collect grapevine plants purchased from Costco in April and May 2026.
These plants may harbor the glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS), an invasive insect capable of spreading Pierce’s disease, a disease that is fatal to grapevines and harms other crops and plants. The County cautions that if the spread is uncontrolled, local fruit and wine production may collapse and Santa Clara County businesses could be prohibited from shipping plants to other parts of the state.
County agricultural staff are visiting customers who purchased these plants to deliver collection supplies and instructions, then returning later to collect the plants for proper disposal at no cost.
Residents should not relocate, compost, or dispose of the plants themselves.
For more information, visit cepascc.org/gwss-costco or contact the Division of Agriculture at 408-918-4662 or SCC.GWSS@cep.sccgov.org.
