It's Getting Warm, Time to Increase Tree Watering!
Claremont is a community known for its beautiful tree-lined streets. Trees improve home values, provide shade and oxygen, and contribute to the character of Claremont. The City has over 24,000 City-owned trees, many over 100 years old. Residents can do their part by adequately watering their trees.
How Much Water Does a Tree Need?
- How much water your tree should receive depends on the tree size. A general formula for watering: Tree Diameter x 5 minutes = Total Watering Time.
What Does a Tree Under “Water Stress” Look Like?
- Water stress may present itself as wilting, yellowing, or scorched leaves.
- Evergreen needles may turn yellow, red, or purple.
- In continued water stress, leaves may be smaller than normal, drop prematurely, or remain attached to the tree even though they are brown.
Besides Proper Watering, What Else Can You Do?
- Add a 4" layer of mulch around tress to reduce moisture loss.
- Use wood chips, shredded bark, leaves, or evergreen needles as mulch.
- Avoid the use of stone or rock near trees as this increases air temperatures and moisture loss.
- Do not use fertilizers during hot summer months. Salts in fertilizers may burn roots when there isn’t sufficient water.
For more information on how to protect your trees during the hot summer months, please visit the link below or contact Community Services at trees@claremontca.gov.

CALL Program - Interest List Closes June 8
The Claremont Senior Program is excited to partner with the Claremont Colleges to introduce the new and improved CALL program (Claremont Avenues for Lifelong Learning). The program will return this fall with fresh opportunities to learn, explore, and engage by auditing college-level courses at the Claremont Colleges. Registering for the CALL program is a multi-step process which requires interested parties to follow various steps in a timely fashion. Please review the process below:
Step 1: Sign Up for the Interest List
- You can register in-person at the Joslyn Center or online through the City’s website.
- All who register will be entered into a lottery; however, selection into the program will be done by random lottery and is not guaranteed.
- Registration for the interest list must be completed by June 8.
- A list of classes will be sent to all individuals registered for the interest list 1-2 weeks prior to the lottery.
Step 2: Lottery
- All individuals on the interest list will be entered into a random lottery to determine their registration date & time.
- Claremont residents will be given priority in registration.
- Please note that registering earlier does not increase your chances of being selected for an earlier lottery time.
Step 3: Register for Classes
- Individuals will receive detailed instructions via email from the Claremont Colleges on how to choose your courses once they are released.
- All class registration will be completed online, making it easy and convenient to secure your spot.
- There is no guarantee that your preferred class will be available at your registration time, as the lottery is randomized and some classes may be full.
- If the number of individuals on the interest list exceeds the amount of course spaces available, it is possible there will not be enough space to accommodate all individuals interested in the program.
Requirements
- It is vital that interested participants have regular access to a computer, internet access, working email, and feel comfortable using technology for both registration and to be successful in courses.
Don’t miss this exciting chance to step back into the classroom, discover new interests, and be part of a vibrant academic community!
