Utility Box Art
Last week, the first artists began painting the next phase of utility boxes around town. The box on the corner of Base Line Road and Towne Avenue was completed by local artist Carissa Hugo and features a blend of flowers, butterflies, and moths all depicted in rich, earthy tones. Over the coming months, eight more boxes will be painted, bringing the total number of unique painted utility boxes in Claremont to 28.

PUBLIC SAFETY NEWS
Reporting Coyote Encounters
Claremont is home to many forms of wildlife, including bears, bobcats, and coyotes. While bears and bobcats may be found in the areas of Claremont adjacent to the hills, coyotes may be found in all areas of the city. Coyotes are especially active in the warm months and at dusk and dawn. Feeding coyotes in Claremont is illegal and can lead to aggressive behavior. Coyotes cannot be trapped and relocated in California. To learn more about living with coyotes or to report a coyote encounter, please visit the link below.

Applications Now Available
The City of Claremont allows hosted short-term rentals within a resident’s primary residence or an eligible accessory structure on the same property. Unhosted short-term rentals (vacation rentals) are strictly prohibited.
The City limits the number of hosted short-term rental permits allowed per zone. STR zones correspond to City Council Districts. This information is updated regularly as applications are processed.
You may download the application on the City website. The application and more information can be found at the link below.
Anti-Harassment Ordinance
On May 13, 2025, the City Council introduced on first reading an ordinance that prohibits harassment in rental housing. This ordinance was adopted during the May 27, 2025 City Council meeting and went into effect starting today (June 26, 2025). The ordinance is self-governing and will prohibit tenant-on-tenant, tenant-on-landlord, and landlord-on-tenant harassment. To read the Anti-Harassment Ordinance or to learn more about other tenant assistance programs, please visit the link below.
Trimming of City Trees by Private Contractors
The City is solely responsible for maintenance of City-owned trees. Maintenance includes, but is not limited to, trimming, planting, treatment, and ultimately removal. The Claremont Municipal Code Section 12.16.090 prohibits any person to injure, prune, root prune, or remove any public tree. It is unlawful to hire a private contractor to trim City trees. Please contact the Community Services Department at trees@claremontca.gov to request maintenance of the City-owned trees on your property.
