Claremont Wildlands Conservancy & City of Claremont Secure 80 Acres of Hillside Open Space
The Claremont Wildlands Conservancy (CWC), in partnership with the City of Claremont, has successfully acquired and protected 80 acres of hillside open space, preserving vital natural habitat and expanding the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park. This landmark achievement prevents development in a Cal Fire-designated "Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone" and enhances regional ecological connectivity for both wildlife and public recreation.
The newly protected Seaver and Jaffe parcels, located above the northwest corner of Claraboya along the western edge of Johnson’s Pasture, now join over 2,500 acres of existing wilderness protected within Claremont’s city limits.
The $3.8 million acquisition was made possible through the combined efforts and financial contributions of local and regional partners.

PICTURE OF THE WEEK
A park visitor shared this photo of a bear seen recently in the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park. Animals such as bears, deer, bobcats, coyotes, and mountain lions are becoming more active as the days become warmer.
If you see any wildlife, remain calm, stand tall, back away slowly, and do not try to get closer or engage the animal. While hiking, make noise to alert all animals of your presence and keep dogs on a leash next to you.

Irrigation Damage
Report Broken Lines
As the weather warms up, wildlife begins searching for water. Any water source is fair game, including the City’s irrigation systems. Rodents begin chewing on drip irrigation lines and coyotes damage sprinkler heads to find water. Rodent damage to irrigation lines will often look like the photo. Damaged irrigation systems are costly and can waste a large amount of water in a short time.
The City’s landscape contractors are continually testing irrigation systems, but damage often occurs outside of their test periods. Broken irrigation in City-maintained parkways, medians, planters, and/or parks should be reported via the City app, by email at maintenance@claremontca.gov, or by calling the Community Services Department at (909) 399-5431.
