Celebrating Pride Month Annual Flag Raising Event Draws Media
Belmont's annual Pride Month Flag Raising ceremony on Thursday drew a crowd of community members, city staff, and a San Francisco-based TV news crew. They were on hand to hear about our commitment to allyship during June's Pride Month.
The 10 a.m. event featured a welcome from Mayor Julia Mates, a statement from San Mateo County District 2 Supervisor Noelia Corzo's office, and readings from Belmont's Poet Laureate Monica Korde and local poet Zara Jamshed.
|
The crowd then turned to witness the colorful Pride Flag as it was raised to the top of our City Hall flagpole along with our state and U.S. flag.
Attracting a broader message about Peninsula cities recognizing Pride Month and Belmont's welcoming approach, KPIX CBS featured our event on its noon news on June 1.

This June, to celebrate Pride Month, you may see City staff wearing a pin like this one. It's our commitment to a kinder world and our way of telling our community that you can be yourself with us. Happy Pride, Belmont.

Parks Accessibility Improvements A New Device Swings into Alexander Park's Playground
Belmont’s parks and open spaces are for everyone. This week, we installed a new swing device to Alexander Park's playground that will make park accessibility for children with disabilities that much more available. Alexander Park is located in the 400 block of Yorkshire Way.
We were able to add this inclusivity feature thanks to the San Mateo County 2023 Summer Enrichment Grant.
The new swing is located within the park's playground and is available to use for any child needing mobility assistance. The way it works is once the user is seated, an overhead harness locks into place providing added safety and comfort for children with disabilities.
Did you know? That’s not the only home of playground accessibility swings in Belmont. We also have an accessibility swing installed in the playground in Twin Pines Park, 1 Twin Pines Lane, and in the playground at Belameda Park, 1110 Alameda de las Pulgas.

Summer Infrastructure Projects
Pavement Rehabilitation Work Begins Soon on Ralston Avenue
Starting June 19, 2023, Belmont's Public Works will begin its Ralston Avenue Pavement Rehabilitation Project, expected to conclude in late August.
During the project's work hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., expect reduced traffic lanes and some closures on side streets off Ralston Avenue. Short closures of driveways may be required, but emergency access will be provided at all times.
|
The work will take place on Ralston Avenue between South (pictured above, westbound Ralston Avenue at South Road) Road and Villa Avenue (pictured at right, eastbound Ralston Avenue at Villa Avenue.
Did You Know? The project will use a sustainable cold-in-place recycled method of pavement rehabilitation, which involves pulverizing and reusing the existing asphalt layer.
This method of repaving greatly reduces truck trips for off-haul and import of material, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and is more sustainable while ensuring a smooth surface and long pavement life. Click on the button below to learn more about this project.

Sewer Rehabilitation Project Update Infrastructure Maintenance on Schedule
We're working to improve our aging sanitary and storm sewer infrastructure. Until the end of July, expect work crews in various locations in our city to be performing work on existing pipes, rehabilitating manholes, conduct-ing pipe replacement, and reconnecting service laterals.
For the next two weeks, our contractor is expected to be in the areas of:
- South Road at Debbie Lane
- Middle Road at Hainline Drive
- and in the easement between Alameda de las Pulgas/Villa Ave north of Ralston Avenue
|
The work will include pipe fusing, sawcutting, CCTVing, pipebursting, and some open trench work.
Residents near the project zone would have already received a notification about the upcoming work. Traffic control will be in place.
For any questions regarding this project, call Senior Civil Engineer Bozhena Palatnik at 650-585-7463 or email at pworks@belmont.gov.

Get to know: Twin Pines Park Storm Water Detention Basin project
In a two-part project (The Creek Restoration Project and Stormwater Detention Basin project) will address the severe erosion and bank failure in Twin Pines Park, and construction of a low-flow sediment capture basin, which further reduces sediment transport downstream.
We were awarded a $1M Urban Streams Restoration Grant from California Department of Water Resources. The grant requires a minimum local match and we share percentages of local matching funds and a percentage of shared obligation for creek restoration with San Carlos and the County of San Mateo. We are the lead agency for this project.
