Fort Smith Named Finalist in The Boring Company’s Tunnel Vision Challenge for Arkansas River Water Infrastructure Project
Fort Smith, AR - The City of Fort Smith has been named one of 16 finalists in the Tunnel Vision Challenge hosted by The Boring Company, an international initiative focused on identifying innovative tunneling solutions for complex infrastructure challenges.
The challenge, launched by the tunneling company founded by Elon Musk, received 487 proposals from governments, companies, and organizations worldwide. A winner is expected to be announced on March 23.
Fort Smith’s proposal would construct a 1.5-mile, 12-foot-diameter tunnel approximately 70 feet beneath the Arkansas River and federal levee, creating a protected casing for a 48-inch water transmission line connecting the Lake Fort Smith Water Treatment Plant to communities south of the river.
The crossing represents the most technically challenging segment of a 30-mile regional transmission system currently under development. Six miles of the pipeline have already been completed.
Once complete, the new transmission line will:
- Add 30 million gallons of water per day in delivery capacity
- Support a total system capacity of up to 60 million gallons per day
Currently, this system serves more than 30 communities across two states and five counties, which could be expanded with a larger transmission line. The system also supports major regional assets, including Fort Chaffee, Ebbing Air National Guard Base, and future manufacturing and military expansion across the region.
The existing Arkansas River crossing was constructed in 1954 using hand tunneling methods. The proposed project would use modern tunnel boring technology to place the transmission line deep within bedrock, protecting it from flooding, erosion, vessel impacts, and river dredging operations.
The transmission project is designed to strengthen long-term regional water reliability and support future population growth, economic development, and national defense infrastructure.
