If you didn't get a chance to join us live this week, here is a brief recap of the highlights of the Commission work session and meeting this week. If you want to go back and watch any portion of the meeting you can do so by visiting our meeting archive on the website.
- In the work session, Commission President Jimmie Stephens asked the Chair of the Board of Equalization, Maria Knight, to explain the state's new 7% cap on property tax increases and how that is applied. Ms. Knight gave a great explanation, and the information is also posted on the front of our website here. In short, the 7% cap was not reflected in property valuation notices (and that was printed on the notices) but it is reflected on a citizens actual tax notices sent in October. The BOE notice reflects the value based on market conditions year to year.
- Commissioners also heard from and approved job incentives for Smart Wiz, an Alabama based company looking to expand their tax software business, the incentives are not to exceed $52,000. With these incentives the company looks to add an additional 60-70 new jobs.
- In addition, the Commission also approved an agreement with Jefferson County Economic Industrial Development Authority (JCEIDA), for a water line improvement project at Barber Blvd, for the new industrial park. ARPA funds will be used for the project.
- Have you ever bought cookies from Cookie Fix? Well the commission approved this week a zoning change that will allow them to make the cookie dough at a new office location off Rocky Ridge Road. We were disappointed they did not bring cookies to the meeting.
- Saving the best for last! County Commissioners joined Commissioner Joe Knight in presenting a congratulatory resolution to 2025 Miss Alabama Emma Terry.
Commissioner Knight acknowledged Terry's dedication to her Community Service Initiative "Stomping Out ALS One Step at a Time" which she has contributed to helping raise well over a quarter million dollars and has garnered over 200,000 views on TikTok, all dedicated to ALS awareness. The Commissioners extended their gratitude for her service and wished her much success during her year reign as Miss Alabama and in the upcoming 2025 Miss America Pageant.

Jefferson County Roads and Transportation has reopened Parkwood Bridge in the Hoover area following an emergency closure a week ago due to erosion caused by flooding and trees piling up on the upstream side of the bridge. Crews worked to first remove the wood, and then replaced the rip rap, using much larger stone at the base. Camera's have been placed at the bridge to monitor what happens during flooding.

We have completed work on the new roundabout at Blue Lake Drive, Sicard Hollow Road, and Cahaba Heights Road. Please use caution, go right, and be aware of the new traffic pattern. We do have a camera at the location to monitor any traffic issues.
