On Monday, the Jefferson County Commission, with Dr. Greg Davis, the Jefferson County Coroner, cut the ribbon on a new 32,000 square foot facility that will be the home to the Coroner's Office.
Poole & Company Architects designed the facility with MWL Architects (both experienced in designing forensic pathology and laboratory spaces) with Doster Construction serving as the General Contractor.
Features of the new office include:
- Built to serve the needs of Jefferson County for the next 30 years with room for expansion.
- Increased examination space and storage capacity in case of a natural disaster or other mass casualty event.
- Drive-through port, so when bodies are being transferred, it will not be visible to any passerby.
- CT scanner, which will expedite the examination of bodies and the recovery of evidence from bodies. This is state-of-the-art for death investigations in the United States.
- Isolation room to examine potentially dangerous or infectious cases, thus containing any potential infection or injury to working personnel.
- Conference room for training sessions with law enforcement and attorneys.
- Private room for meeting with relatives of the deceased.
Plans for the new office started when construction of the new Cooper Green Medical Clinic began. The Coroner's office is located in the old Cooper Green facility and needed to be relocated.
