Jefferson County Commissioners broke ground on the new Animal Control Facility this week. This 36,000 square foot facility is scheduled to be completed in Nov. 2025 and is being built by Stone Construction with BL Harbert International serving as project manager. It was designed by Birchfield Penuel & Associates. The Greater Birmingham Humane Society currently manages animal control services for the County and plans to raise money for, and build, next door a new veterinary training facility and adoption center. Jefferson County purchased the 6.5 acre property located in Oxmoor Corporate Park (on Sydney Drive) in 2021 for $1.4 million dollars. The total estimated cost for the new facility is $25.8 million dollars. Commissioner Knight explained the importance of the new facility, "The problem we have now is that the animals that we take in are taken to Woodlawn. That facility is in poor condition, is remote, and woefully outdated. From there the animals must be transferred to Hoover to get medical care. After that, if possible, they are transferred to Homewood to the adoption facility. This new facility will eliminate all of that back and forth and provide ample space that is so needed."
Smucker's officially cut the ribbon on their new facility in McCalla last week! This state of the art 900,000 square foot production and distribution facility is Smucker's 3rd in the U.S., as well as it's largest, and boasts the largest bakery oven in the world. When fully operational it will employ more than 700 and can make 400,000 Uncrustables in a 12-hour work shift! It's fully automated and is a zero waste facility.
Sweeping Corporation of America continues to make progress picking up roadside litter in unincorporated Jefferson County. The Commission approved a $500,000 contract this year with SCA to address a list of roads across all districts on a rotating schedule. #KeepItCleanJeffCo
