Development Services (the department that manages planning and zoning for unincorporated Jefferson County) is presenting a request to the Planning and Zoning Board on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. in Commission Chambers for a 90-day moratorium on zoning requests for densely populated single-family housing developments. If approved there, it would then move the County Commission for a vote at the end of October.
This moratorium would give the department time to complete the new comprehensive plan that it has been in the process of updating for the past year. As a part of that process, the overwhelming feedback from citizens in both surveys and public meetings is that they would like to see developments that create more of a town square feel and/or include parks and more green spaces. The new comprehensive plan will address this with new zoning guidance. Before it is adopted, citizens will have an opportunity to review it and provide comment on the new comprehensive plan.
In the meantime, if citizens would like to provide feedback on this proposed moratorium they can come to the meeting on Thursday, or send a letter to the Development Services Department, Jefferson County Courthouse Suite B200, 716 Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. N. Birmingham, AL 35203.
Sweeping Corp of America is once again picking up litter across all districts of Jefferson County. The Commission allocated $500k this year to remove litter from County roadways.
