It was a great morning Thursday, as Coca-Cola UNITED broke ground on the new state-of-the-art Birmingham campus. Jefferson County Commissioner Lashunda Scales, (whose district the facility is located in) joined County Commission President Pro Tem Joe Knight and welcomed Governor Kay Ivey, area representatives, and community leaders to celebrate this major project. This past May, Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to assist in the remediation of this brownfield site (old Stockham Valve plant) that will serve as the new home for Coca-Cola Bottling Company United and its distribution operations. The project's total investment will be $335 million, sustaining existing jobs and creating 50 new jobs within the county.
The Jefferson County Economic Industrial Development Authority, which is separate from the County Commission, announced plans for new industrial development park in the northern part of Jefferson County. A number of media entities covered the story and the Commission is in support of the project. The next several months will be a due diligence phase with site planning. Then it will take a least another year to get the infrastructure in place for the park. It is strategically placed for automotive suppliers to Mercedes, Toyota/Mazda in Huntsville, and the Honda plant in Lincoln. The County did already own part of the property and added two parcels to it.

Jefferson County has added a new chat tool to the front of its website in order to help citizens find the information they need quicker. Powered by a new vendor called CitiBot, the tool answers questions and provides a link to more information. If it doesn't understand what you are looking for, it will ask questions back. Citizens can also report items via the chat tool and it will integrate with the MyJeffCo app to get those requests in our workflow. It may not know the meaning of life, but it can help you get your driver's license renewed, options for your car tag, and tell you who your elected representative is.
