Four new cases of COVID-19 reported in four Alaska communities; one nonresident case reported in a seafood industry worker in Dillingham

May 16, 2020 ANCHORAGE — The Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) today announced four new cases of COVID-19 in four Alaska communities – Anchorage (1), Chugiak (1), Homer (1) and a community in the Bethel Census Area (1). This brings the total Alaska case count to 392.

These cases reflect data from 12:00 a.m. until 11:59 p.m. on May 15 that posted at noon today on the Alaska Coronavirus Response Hub.

The Bethel Census area case included in today’s case count was reported yesterday in a press release from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation. This is the second case identified in the Bethel Census Area. The person was identified through COVID-19 screening and testing of passengers traveling through the Bethel Airport.

One new case in a nonresident was also identified yesterday in a seafood worker in Dillingham. Details for that case are provided in a Unified Command press release issued earlier today. Since the person is not an Alaska resident, this case is not included in the total Alaska case count of 392. There have been a total of nine nonresident cases; four of those cases have been in seafood workers, two in visitors, two in airline industry workers and one identified with the mining industry.

Of the new Alaska resident cases, three are male and one is female. There have been a total of 43 hospitalizations and 10 deaths with two new hospitalizations and no deaths reported yesterday. Recovered cases now total 344, including one new recovered case recorded yesterday. A total of 33,281 tests have been conducted.
