Calling All Alaska Educators!
DEED is recruiting for four virtual events where Alaska educators can be involved in the assessment item development process for AK STAR, the Alaska Science Assessment, or both! If you have a strong understanding of Alaska’s current academic standards and currently live in Alaska, we’d love to have you participate! All reviews will be held during off contract hours. Complete the assessment interest form if you’d like to participate in any of these virtual events. Only completed applications will be considered.
Assessment Data Reviews
Alaska educators will review and provide feedback on test item data from the spring 2024 administrations. This review will assist DEED and our vendors in building operational assessments for future administrations. Participants will receive $100-$150 stipend for full participation.
- Science Data Review: Tuesday, September 24 – 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Assessment Item Reviews
Alaska educators will evaluate and provide feedback on new science test items, verify alignment to Alaska’s standards and review for bias and sensitivity. Participants receive a $250 stipend for full participation.
- Science Item Review: Friday, September 27 – 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm and Saturday, September 28 7 – 8:00 am – 4:00 pm

TEACH-AK District Portal
The TEACH-AK District Portal is currently under construction. Teacher Certification has put together a district support document which will provide districts information and insight into how they can support applicants through the certification process.
Alaska Reads Act - add endorsement fee is resuming starting July 1, 2024
The one-time legislative funding provided to cover the cost of the Alaska Reads Act endorsement ends June 30, 2024. The $50 fee will resume July 1, 2024. All applications need to be submitted online through TEACH-AK. Click here for the add endorsement application instructions.
If educators complete a DEED offered professional learning course, they do NOT need to turn in an application. Their certificate is on record with DEED and the appropriate AK Reads K-3 Teacher/Administrator endorsement will be added to their certificate prior to the July 1, 2025, deadline. They will receive an email with a link to TEACH AK where they can view, download, and print their updated certificate.
Note: There are additional requirements that need to be submitted for the Alaska Reads Act Reading Teacher and the Alaska Reads Act Early Education Lead endorsement.

State of Alaska RECRUITMENT NOTICE
The Department of Education & Early Development (DEED) is seeking an experienced communications and marketing specialist to complete our executive office team in Juneau.
This position will direct public information and communication activities of the department and represent the Commissioner at meetings and to the media. The incumbent will play an integral role in producing public information for the Department of Education, including articles, speeches, letters, submissions to government bodies, responses to public information queries, information campaigns, and publicity. They will write scripts, produce video messages, and create advertisements for print, video, and social media. The successful candidate will manage social media content, including creating content, planning meaningful engagement, and coordinating efforts with DEED’s divisions and other education organizations.

The Denali School District has committed itself to literacy education, going beyond requirements to embrace a strong belief in the transformative power of literacy. In response, the district has implemented initiatives, such as providing more resources and support to teachers as part of its literacy plan.
The concerted effort of parent-school partnership is already showing positive results, as demonstrated by an increase in reading proficiency observed throughout the district.
