The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (DEED) administers the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to provide nutritious meals during the summer break for children ages 1-18 while they do not have access to school meals. DEED is seeking sponsors for SFSP during the summer of 2024.
Sponsors provide meals and/or snacks at eligible schools, colleges and universities, nonprofit organizations, parks, camps, community centers, swimming pools, libraries, and low-income housing complexes at no cost to the child or family. To reach more children in rural areas, regulations have been expanded to include sites that propose to conduct non-congregate meal service for eligible children in rural areas that are not served by a congregate meal service.
Sponsors receive reimbursement for meals and snacks that meet the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) program requirements. The USDA provides program funding while DEED administers the program and provides sponsors with SFSP training and technical assistance. A sponsoring organization must be:
- A public or nonprofit private school;
- A public or nonprofit residential summer camp;
- A unit of local, municipal, county, or state government;
- A public or nonprofit college or university; or
- Any other type of private nonprofit organization, which develops a special summer program providing foodservice for children 18 and under.
Sponsors must provide documentation that proposed meal service locations meet eligibility requirements. Eligible sites are those that serve children in areas where poor economic conditions exist or those that serve specific groups of children from low-income households.
