The Alaska State Board of Education will hold an in-person meeting in Juneau on Tuesday, February 27 and Wednesday, February 28, 2024. Today's meeting will be a work session. The National Park Service is once again generously sponsoring the One Ocean Art Show as part of Tsunami Bowl. Student artwork will be on display at the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward from March 18th - March 24th.
Please complete this form if your school plans to submit student artwork for display. Students may enter up to 3 pieces of original art. There is no limit to the number of pieces from each school.
Artwork must be original and created solely by the participating student during the 2023-24 school year. No published, traced, or copied materials will be allowed.
Submissions must include (with the piece) the student's name, grade, title of the piece, school, and category.
Art will be judged according to the following categories: painting, drawing, printmaking/mixed media, photography, and 3-D (functional or sculptural).
Mail artwork to: Tsunami Bowl, PO Box 730, Seward, AK 99664 via USPS or 201 Railway Avenue, Seward, AK 99664 if using any other carrier.
Submissions must be in Seward by March 15, 2024.
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is pleased to announce that the application period for its Youth Preparedness Council (YPC) is now open.
FEMA created the Youth Preparedness Council in 2012 to bring together leaders in grades 8th - 11th from across the country who are interested in supporting disaster preparedness nationally and locally. The YPC offers an opportunity for teens passionate about emergency management, climate resilience, community preparedness, and mental health to engage directly with FEMA to share ideas and feedback, grow their leadership skills and make a difference in their communities.
YPC members also participate in a biennial summit in Washington, D.C. (tentatively scheduled for July 2025) where they will network and learn more about emergency management with FEMA leaders and other preparedness professionals.
The online application opens on Jan. 22, 2024 and closes on March 4 at, 11:59 p.m. PT. Selected candidates will be notified of their status by June of 2024.

 The GPA program provides grants to institutions and private, nonprofit education entities that organize programs for K-12 teachers, college students, and faculty to engage in short- or long-term overseas projects focused on training, research, and curriculum development in modern foreign languages and area studies. GPA short-term projects include seminars, curriculum development, and group research or study. GPA long-term projects support advanced intensive overseas programs that focus on languages, the humanities, or social sciences.
IFLE expects to make 30 new awards totaling approximately $5.1 million under the FY 2024 GPA competition. The application is now available at www.grants.gov. The deadline to submit an application is March 18, 2024.

The Commission will meet on April 11-12, 2024 to consider disciplinary actions against certificate holders, to conduct administrative reviews, and to discuss other Commission business.

Governor Dunleavy proclaimed February as Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month! CTE prepares students for the workforce and life after graduation by introducing them to hands-on workplace skills and opportunities.
Did you know that the graduation rate for students who complete at least two CTE courses in a single career pathway is about 97%? That's amazing!

Senator Murkowski provides an opportunity each year for graduating high school seniors to be summer interns in her office. The interns have the opportunity to learn about the U.S. Senate, work in a professional office, shadow the Senator, attend meetings and committee hearings, perform special projects, have fun, and explore Washington, D.C. Eight students will be chosen for each of the two summer sessions. More information can be found at https://www.murkowski.senate.gov/assistance/students/internships.
Qualifications: Senator Murkowski is looking for independent, inquisitive, and mature young Alaskans. There is no GPA threshold requirement to apply. Applicants need not be interested in political science.

Deadline to Apply: 11:59 p.m. Alaska Standard Time on March 18, 2024. It is preferred that applications be e-mailed to Angelina_Burney@murkowski.senate.gov but may also be mailed via U.S. Mail, FedEx, or UPS. However, the Senate’s mail screening procedures are likely to delay delivery, and no applications that arrive after the deadline will be considered.
Internship Session Dates:
- Session One: June 2nd to July 29th, 2024
- Session Two: July 7th to August 3rd, 2024
- Please note which session is preferred on the application.
Housing, Transportation, Stipend: Housing and transportation will be coordinated by the Senator's office, but interns will be responsible for the cost. Interns will be paid a small stipend that is intended to help defray costs associated with the internship program. Housing is located at the Washington Intern Student Housing (WISH) dormitories on Capitol Hill.
