The National STEM Festival will take place in person, April 11-13, 2024, at The Square, 1850 K St., NW, Washington, DC. The schedule to date follows:
- April 11 – ED will host a 2nd You Belong in STEM Convening
(invitation only)
- April 12 – student innovators will exhibit their projects for the media and federal VIPs. (invitation only)
- April 13, 12:00-5:00 PM – student innovators and federal STEM agencies will exhibit for the public (open invitation)
On Thursday, December 14th, DEED will be hosting a webinar on Social and Emotional Support and Coaching.
Intended Audience
- Administrators from all districts with an Early Education Program.
Purpose:
- Dive into Alaska’s Early Education Program Standards.
- Plan for documentation of high-quality early education programming.
- Familiarize the requirements of the 2024-2025 District-Wide Early Education Program Approval (.5 ADM Funding) application.
Schedule:
- Registration is required for all live webinars. Follow the links to register.

New Appointment to the Commission
Ketchikan Borough School District Superintendent Michael Robbins has been appointed to the Professional Teaching Practices Commission by Governor Dunleavy. We look forward to working with Mr. Robbins!
Contractual Obligations Policy
PTPC has the authority to investigate allegations of a breach of contract. Becoming familiar with the Contractual Obligations Policy will help educators and school districts follow regulations to terminate contracts mutually and professionally.

OWL Program Manager & Library Technology Consultant Librarian 3

The Alaska State Library is on the lookout for a dynamic librarian to serve as the Online With Libraries (OWL) Program Manager and library technology consultant.
What You Will Be Doing
In this pivotal role, you will empower Alaska librarians by providing professional and technical guidance in public internet access, videoconferencing, and library technology. You will help fortify local library services by identifying and selectively engaging in technology projects and grant opportunities that strengthen and elevate these services. You will manage the OWL Program and assist libraries in harnessing the power of videoconferencing, internet access, and library tech to make their services top-notch. From tiny remote libraries in the wild to bustling city book havens, you will contribute to the enhancement of library services for people of all ages across Alaska.

TOY is an excellent way to acknowledge the expertise, skills, accomplishments, and professionalism of teachers within your school. Nominations close on Jan. 31, 2024.
Any interested Alaska citizen may make nominations for the Alaska Teacher of the Year. Nominees should:
- Have five (5) or more years of experience in the field of education.
- Be a classroom teacher during the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 school years.
The selected individual will serve as the Alaska State Teacher of the Year for the 2025 calendar year.

The National Park Service is once again generously sponsoring the One Ocean Art Show as part of Tsunami Bowl. Student artwork will be on display at the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward from March 18th - March 24th.
Please complete this form if your school plans to submit student artwork for display. Students may enter up to 3 pieces of original art. There is no limit to the number of pieces from each school.
Artwork must be original and created solely by the participating student during the 2023-24 school year. No published, traced, or copied materials will be allowed.
Submissions must include (with the piece) the student's name, grade, title of the piece, school, and category.
Art will be judged according to the following categories: painting, drawing, printmaking/mixed media, photography, and 3-D (functional or sculptural).
Mail artwork to: Tsunami Bowl, PO Box 730, Seward, AK 99664 via USPS or 201 Railway Avenue, Seward, AK 99664 if using any other carrier.
Submissions must be in Seward by March 15, 2024.
Tomorrow, December 13, at 10:00AM Alaska Time, the National Center on Improving Literacy (NCIL), in collaboration with Boston University, is hosting a series of live webinar discussions on the science of reading, literacy instruction, and literacy-related policies that affect students and teachers. School district leaders and implementation researchers will discuss how to sustain your Multi-tiered System of Support for Reading.
Panelists will discuss how practitioners can sustain a strong MTSS-R that supports all students’ reading development. Participants will receive access to a variety of free, evidence-based tools and resources, including NCIL’s online MTSS-R Implementation Guide.
NAEP 2024: Give Your Best Effort!
Alaskan students from the Fairbanks North Star Borough School District share the importance of putting your best foot forward during the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). NAEP, also known as the Nation's Report Card, will be given to students across Alaska this winter.
The CDC has created an action guide to help school and district leaders promote students’ mental health and find new strategies to fill in gaps. The action guide, on their Promoting Mental Health and Well-Being in Schools webpage, describes six in-school strategies that are proven to promote and support mental health and well-being.
