As we enter the 18th year of Poetry Out Loud, we hope you will join us! The Alaska Poetry Out Loud partnership team at the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council and the Alaska State Council on the Arts is pleased to open registration for Alaska Poetry Out Loud in the 2023-2024 school year! The deadline for registration is November 1, 2023, and complete information and registration form is available at https://www.jahc.org/education/poetry-out-loud/.
Poetry Out Loud is a national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition for high school students across the country. Rather than being a simple exercise in memorization, learning to recite poetry encompasses college and career readiness skills, including structural analysis, interpretation of meaning, point of view, close reading, and the use of higher-order thinking skills. From classroom, to school, to regional, state, and national competition high school students gather for a competitive and collegial experience with peers, to engage with both poetic voice and civic opportunities.
Each winner at the state level receives $200 and competes in the national finals. The state winner’s school receives $500 for the purchase of poetry materials. The first runner-up in each state receives $100, with $200 for their school. At the national finals, a total of $50,000 in awards and school stipends is awarded annually. Students and chaperones participating at the Alaska State and National Poetry Out Loud Recitation Competitions receive travel support to Juneau or Washington, DC for competition.
Visit https://www.jahc.org/education/poetry-out-loud/ to learn more about Alaska Poetry Out Loud, and to register. Clarification of Prohibition on Use of Federal Education Funds for Certain Weapons and Related Training
On October 6, 2023 President Biden signed H.R. 5110 Protecting Hunting Heritage and Education Act which clarifies that Federal Department of Education funds may be used to provide certain weapons or training in the use of weapons within educational instruction or enrichment activities. This act amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 to allow schools to use federal education funds to purchase or use dangerous weapons (as defined in law) to train students in archery, hunting, other shooting sports or culinary arts. This changes prior guidance related to districts’ implementation of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which originally prohibited the use of federal funds for the purchase of dangerous weapons.
While the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development has not required any district to end such activities – as they can be funded by state, local or philanthropic dollars – this change means that districts may again choose to use federal funds, consistent with all federal programing requirements, to run these programs. Questions can be directed to Courtney.Preziosi@alaska.gov.
DEED is hosting an amazing line up of Science of Reading speakers. Each month, a new reading leader will share a direct to classroom technique or strategy to add to your SOR toolkit (curricular agnostic), followed by some casual educator chat.
Have questions about reading or choosing interventions? Perhaps you are a single teacher in a village school needing a collaboration partner, or maybe a student just has you stuck and you want a brainstorming partner? This will be an open time for conversation, sharing, and problem solving!
This month, Denise Eide will join us on November 20th.
The Department of Education and Early Development proposes to supplement changes to limited teacher certificate regulations previously noticed on December 20, 2022 including adoption of material by reference and proposed amendments to the seal of biliteracy regulation.
You can read the full text here: SUPPLEMENTAL NOTICE OF PROPOSED CHANGES
Public comment closes on November 17, 2023.
