The UAF School of Education is proud to announce that 41 UAF education students were awarded approximately $838,000 in scholarships through the Alaska College of Education Consortium UA Teacher Internship Scholarship program.
The Teacher Internship Scholarship is open to students in a UA education program, who are Alaska residents and who have a junior level standing or higher, as a means to support them through the completion of their teacher certification program. The Teacher Internship Scholarship includes both tuition and fee coverage and a living stipend of $5,000 each semester students are working as full time interns in a K12 classroom. UAF awardees came from the following BA or post-baccalaureate programs: elementary, secondary, special education, K-12 art, and music education.
Collegiate study can pose financial barriers to students who need to work to support themselves and their families while they attend classes. UAF’s rigorous internship year is often a point where students must begin focusing solely on their educational practices and no longer have time for work. The scholarship is designed to help them through this year.
Here’s what our students are saying about how this scholarship removes barriers to their education:
“This scholarship would be of immense help to me as it will alleviate significant financial stress that I will otherwise experience during my student teaching year.”
"I am amazingly grateful and excited to see how this scholarship opportunity can help me to achieve my dream and finish a Master degree in Special education."
The next scholarship application period will open in January 2024 for the 2024-2025 academic year.
The Alaska PTA Annual Convention is on August 12th in Anchorage. Topics include: how to run your PTA, fundraising ideas, IRS/non-profit requirements, leadership training, and elections. Special Guest Jordan Durham of Minding Your Mind will also be speaking.

The 17th Coast Guard District, which covers all of Alaska, is in need of a Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC).
Section 11247 of the FY23 National Defense Authorization Act enacted in December 2022 requires that all Coast Guard Districts have a JROTC unit by the end of 2025. Alaska does not yet have a Coast Guard JROTC.
The flagship purpose of JROTC is "to instill in students in United States secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, and personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment."
If any schools are interested in starting a JROTC unit, contact the Program Manager in Washington, D.C at CGJROTC@uscg.mil.
