Boy silhouette

Contributed by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming

There are lots of things you can do to keep your kids active while social distancing at home! Here are 10 ideas to get your kids heart rates up:

1. Go for a run, walk, or bike ride around the neighborhood
2. Crank the music and dance
3. Take a stretch break
4. Do some yard work
5. Use a fitness app or try online fitness videos
6. Use household items to create a backyard obstacle course
7. Start spring cleaning/organizing
8. Try an indoor or outdoor scavenger hunt – you can find lots of ideas online
9. Try yoga
10. Playtime can be activity time – try duck, duck, goose or hot potato catch

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that children and teens perform at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each day – try scheduling these activity breaks into two or three sessions each day.

As the weather warms up, it’s important to continue to follow the guidelines for social distancing, while also enjoying the open spaces and sunshine that Wyoming offers.

Successful Home Learning

Child homeschool

The school year is winding down and your family may have settled into a homeschooling routine.  If home learning is still causing you headaches, below are a few suggestions from the American Academy of Pediatrics to help you get through the day.

  • Get everyone out of bed at the same time, as if it were a normal school day.
  • Find a dedicated spot for each family member to do their work.
  • Create a schedule for each child to do school work, get exercise, and take breaks. Younger children will need more breaks than older children.
  • Schedule times for healthy meals and snacks. Visit nohungerwyo.org/covid for local food resources.
  • Eat dinner as a family to discuss the day.
  • Stick to bed time routines for the whole family.
