EPSDT-The Importance of an Annual Checkup

Early and periodic screening, diagnosis, and treatment (EPSDT) office visits are key to your child’s overall health. Each year, children of all ages should be visiting with their doctor or dentist to complete a health and/or dental risk assessment.

During this visit, your child should expect to have a comprehensive exam including both physical and mental health. Your doctor may also complete routine immunizations, vision, and hearing tests. If you are visiting your dentist you should expect an oral health exam as well as cleanings and other oral health treatments. This is also a great time for you, as a parent, to ask questions relating to your child’s development, behavior and nutrition just to name a few. Many of these screenings are covered under your plan with no out of pocket cost to you.

For more information regarding your child’s benefits, you can refer to your Kid Care CHIP Handbook or call the 1-800 number listed on the back of your Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming insurance card. If you have questions on your dental benefits you can call the 1-800 number listed on your Delta Dental insurance card.

Protect Your Family with Flu Shots

The 2018-19 influenza season is upon us. Wyoming Department of Health (WDH) representatives say flu vaccines are the best available weapon in the ongoing fight against flu.

Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus.

Symptoms include:

  • fever
  • headache
  • extreme tiredness
  • dry cough
  • sore throat
  • runny or stuffy nose
  • muscle aches

According to Dr. Alexia Harrist, state epidemiologist and state health officer with WDH, “nearly everyone six months or older should get a seasonal flu vaccine. Flu shots are safe and the most important action people can take to help prevent getting ill with influenza and passing it on to others. In addition to helping you avoid the flu in the first place, vaccines can also help make illnesses less severe for those who do still get sick.”

Vaccines are especially important for:

  • young children
  • pregnant women
  • people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart and lung disease;
  • people 65 years and older.
  • healthcare workers, and other people who live with or care for high risk people.
  • people who live with or care for infants. Babies younger than 6 months are at high risk, but are too young to be vaccinated.

Harrist said anyone can get the flu and healthy people usually recover. “But they can also spread the virus to others who may be more vulnerable such as the elderly,” she added.

Influenza vaccines are available in many locations including:

  • local public health nursing offices
  • doctors’ offices
  • pharmacies
  • retail stores

Flu vaccines are covered by Kid Care CHIP with no co-pay.
