8 Toothy Tips for Keeping Our Kids Teeth Healthy

Child Smile

The most important preventive step against childhood oral health disease is to establish good oral health habits at an early age, according to the American Academy of Periodontology.

Here are some basic preventive steps to help our children maintain good dental health:

  1. Brush for two minutes, 2 times per day…with our kids.
  2. Show them how to clean between teeth…FLOSS!
  3. Limit sugary snacks & drinks between meals, eat healthy.
  4. See the dentist regularly for family checkups, and ask the about sealants & fluoride.
  5. Establish good dental hygiene habits early. When your child is 12 months old, you can begin using toothpaste when brushing his or her teeth.
  6. When the gaps between children’s teeth close, it’s important to start flossing.
  7. Serve as a good role model by practicing good dental hygiene habits ourselves.
  8. Check our child’s mouth for the signs of periodontal disease, including bleeding gums, swollen and bright red gums, gums that are receding away from the teeth and bad breath.

Remember that your child’s Kid Care CHIP benefits cover dental as well as your age appropriate screenings under EPSDT.

Poison Control

Cleaning products

If you are concerned your child has ingested something harmful call 1-800-222-1222. Save this number in your phone today.

Poison control centers receive over three million calls from across the country each year. More than half of these calls involve children under 5 years old.

In 2016 the most common pediatric poisoning  were caused by exposure to:

  1. Cosmetic and Personal Care Items
  2. Cleaning Products
  3. Painkillers
  4. Foreign objects (coins, pins, button batteries, toys)
  5. Topical products

Most childhood poisonings are not life threatening, but parents should be especially concerned with exposure to opioids, heart medications, one dose laundry detergent and highly concentrated cleaning products.  All of these could be deadly to a child.

To prevent these poisonings from happening:

  • Keep the Poison Help phone number at your fingertips by saving the number in your mobile phone: 1-800-222-1222.
  • Practice safe storage habits. Keep medicines and cleaning products out of reach of children.
  • Read and follow all labels and directions. Review medicine labels before giving it to children.
  • Have a working carbon monoxide detector in your home.
  • Have your child screened for lead poisoning.
