Wyoming State Geological Survey Announces Leadership Transition
CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Governor Mark Gordon has appointed Ranie Lynds as Interim Director of the Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS), following the departure of Erin Campbell, who has served as State Geologist and Director since 2017.
Campbell has accepted the position of State Geologist for Alaska. During her eight years at the helm of WSGS, Campbell oversaw a wide range of projects in energy, mineral resources, hazards, and mapping, and expanded the Survey’s role in providing timely, science-based information to the public and policymakers.
“It has been a privilege to serve Wyoming as State Geologist,” Campbell said. “This agency is filled with exceptional scientists and staff who are dedicated to serving the people of Wyoming. While I am excited for new challenges ahead, I will always value my time here and the opportunity to work alongside such a talented team.”
Lynds joined WSGS in 2012 and has served as Energy and Mineral Resources Manager since 2017. Her work has included research on oil and gas, oversight of the STATEMAP and Earth MRI programs, and leadership on airborne geophysical surveys across the state. She holds degrees in geology and geophysics from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in geology from the University of Wyoming.
“I am honored by the Governor’s trust in appointing me to this role,” Lynds said. “Erin leaves an incredible legacy at the Survey, and I look forward to building on that foundation as we continue to deliver high-quality geologic research and information for the benefit of Wyoming.”
Campbell was appointed by Governor Matt Mead in 2017 and reappointed by Governor Gordon in 2019. In addition to leading the WSGS, she served as a Commissioner for the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, a member of the Enhanced Oil Recovery Commission, and on the Wyoming Board of Professional Geologists.
The WSGS conducts research and disseminates information on Wyoming’s geology, energy, and mineral resources, as well as geologic hazards. The Survey provides unbiased geologic information to promote the health, safety, and economic welfare of Wyoming’s citizens.
