WSGS expands interactive oil and gas map with latest data and insights

The Wyoming State Geological Survey (WSGS) has released the latest update to the interactive oil and gas map of Wyoming. The underlying datasets of wells, fields, hydrocarbon facilities, and development areas have also been made available as a digital data release. The interactive online map was initially published in 2016 and is modeled after the WSGS’s traditional oil and gas maps of Wyoming.

State Geologist and WSGS Director Dr. Erin Campbell stated, “The WSGS has been publishing maps of Wyoming oil and gas fields since 1915. Our last hardcopy release of the statewide oil and gas map of Wyoming was in 2019. As much as I enjoy having a map on the wall to reference, the interactive map is much easier to keep updated and more useful for accessing data.”

This update marks the seventh iteration of the online map and includes more than 450 new wells in named oil and gas fields and more than 1,650 new and historical wildcat wells. Digital well data and oil and gas production data provided by the Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (WOGCC) were cross-referenced against historical documentation to verify well locations, productivity, and status.

The interactive oil and gas map of Wyoming has historically been one of the WSGS’s most popular products and is widely used by industry geoscientists, contractors, private citizens, and government stakeholders.

“While each subsequent update to the map may be subtle, the amount of data and geologic insight behind it cannot be overstated,” says Jeremy Ring, WSGS geologist and one of the map’s curators. “It is important to be able to provide this information to the public in an accessible, digital format which is available to download for free.”

The web-based interactive platform includes oil and gas fields, producing reservoirs, vertical and horizontal wells, pipelines, oil refineries, gas plants, and well production status. “The quantity and quality of the data in the geodatabase combine to deliver a valuable tool for the state of Wyoming. The interactive map provides a greater understanding of Wyoming’s natural resources and their responsible use throughout the state,” says Dr. Raul Ochoa, WSGS geologist, who assisted with data quality control.

The interactive map and data download can both be accessed from the main WSGS website. Most data layers can be selected within a user-defined area of interest and results exported to .csv, GeoJSON, or ArcGIS feature collection formats. WOGCC well data and WSGS-generated oil and gas infrastructure data can also be downloaded directly, either in full or within user defined boundaries.
