PROPOSED TEMPORARY TURBIDITY INCREASE IN STREAMS ON NATIONAL FORESTS IN WYOMING

The Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Water Quality Division has received a request from the United States Forest Service for a temporary increase of turbidity in streams on National Forest lands in Wyoming.  Activities occurring in these streams are normally limited to a ten nephelometric turbidity unit (NTU) increase over background.  Approval of this request would allow for an exceedance of this limit during 2018 for minor maintenance projects requiring less than two days to complete.  This request will follow the procedures of Chapter 1, Section 23(c)(2) of the Wyoming DEQ Water Quality Rules and Regulations which allows for temporary elevated levels of turbidity in certain circumstances.

The purpose of these projects is to perform any minor maintenance or repairs necessary, requiring less than two days to complete, that may result in turbidity increases.  The projects will occur within National Forest boundaries in Wyoming.

The Water Quality Division will be accepting written comments on the temporary turbidity increase through December 26, 2017.  Comments should be addressed to Cathy Norris, Wyoming DEQ/WQD, 200 West 17th Street – 4th Floor, Cheyenne, WY  82002.  Questions about this action or requests for other related information and documents should also be directed to Cathy Norris at 307-777-6372 (Fax:  307-635-1784) or by email at cathy.norris@wyo.gov.
