WY-TOPP OFF-GRADE TESTING FALL 2020

WDE is offering additional interim testing (off-grade) during the fall 2020 window (Sept. 1 - Oct. 23). Due to COVID-19, students were unable to take the summative assessment. In an effort to support teachers in assessing student progress, students will have the opportunity to take interims in their previously attended grade level (off-grade) in addition to the on-grade interims, during this extended assessment window. The interim assessments remain optional to school districts.

THREE WIDA SELF-PACED eWORKSHOPS FOR EDUCATORS

wida sis

Beginning April 2020, educators have the opportunity to participate in three self-paced, on-demand eWorkshops developed by WIDA. These workshops may be valuable for K-12 classroom teachers, ESL specialists, and district and school administrators.

These eWorkshops cover a range of topics, including:

  • Classroom Educators: Engaging Newcomer Multilingual Learners.
  • Foundational Concepts.
  • WIDA Writing Rubric.

The eWorkshops are available in the eLearning Center in the WIDA Secure Portal. If you don’t have a WIDA Secure Portal account, contact your District EL Coordinator or Antoinette Hallam at antoinette.hallam@wyo.gov.

See the attached flyer for full descriptions.

DELAY IN SCREENING FOR NEW STUDENTS - POTENTIAL ACTIVE ENGLISH LEARNERS DETERMINATION

ELL

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is currently not possible to screen newly enrolled students, who may meet the federal definition of an English Learner (EL), using the English Language Proficiency Assessment Screener. Students whose Home Language Survey (HLS) indicates the need for screening will be considered a “potential” English Learner until the ELPA Screener can be administered safely and securely.

Districts will offer these students language services based on the student’s needs as well as what is being provided to Active English Learners. When on-site schooling resumes, these “potential” Active English Learners will be screened with the ELPA Screener to determine their official status as an Active English Learner or English proficient. A step-by-step process is outlined below.

  1. The HLS indicates a student may be an Active English Learner, the district will conduct  an interview with the family.
  2. If a follow-up conversation with the family confirms that HLS questions were answered correctly, the student is informally identified as a Potential Active EL and language services are provided like other Active English Learners.
  3. The student is not officially identified in the district's local Student Information System (SIS) until the identification process is completed by administering the WIDA Screener.

Open Forum Meeting for Special Educators

At the Wyoming Department of Education (WDE), we recognize the work being done to educate Wyoming students through distance learning during the pandemic. Educating students with the most significant needs through distance learning can be challenging. The WDE is presenting collaborative opportunities for educators providing distance learning to students with significant intellectual disabilities. An open forum Zoom meeting will be held on May 12th at 1:30 p.m.

Contact Jennifer D'Alessandro, WDE Vision Outreach Services Consultant, at 307-754-2147 or jennifer.dalessandro@wyo.gov if you have any questions.
