ENGAGING ENGLISH LEARNERS IN SCIENCE

December 18-19, 2018 in Evanston

A two-day workshop will delve into strategies to engage English language learners utilizing science practices. 

After developing a common understanding of language expectations, participants will explore strategies and supports that foster a language-rich environment.

Participants will be able to:

  • Create a common understanding of academic language and proficiency levels
  • Gain a deeper understanding of science and engineering practices
  • Engage in instructional strategies that support creating language-rich environments for students to create meaning of science and engineering practices
  • Apply targeted supports for a variety of proficiency levels

STATE MUSIC CONFERENCE 2019

Attendees of the WMEA State Music Conference have the opportunity to participate in professional development sessions covering a wide range of topics including teaching techniques, creativity, assessment strategies, and music literature. College and PTSB credits are available.

PEARL HARBOR DAY, WYOMING DAY

Wyoming PBS is offering learning resources for Pearl Harbor Day and Wyoming Day. 

Students K-12 will learn about World War II and its impact on Wyoming as part of the Pearl Harbor Day observance on December 7 and about Wyoming's Constitution and territorial history in celebration of Wyoming Day on December 10.

AMERICAN DREAM ESSAY CONTEST

Deadline March 2, 2019

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Wyoming will host the American Dream Essay Contest.

Wyoming high school students are encouraged to submit an essay based on a Cowboy Ethic Value or create a Cowboy Ethic Value of their own. Winners will receive cash awards.

POETRY OUT LOUD

Poetry Out Loud logo

Poetry Out Loud encourages high school students (grades 9-12) to learn about poetry through memorization and performance. The Wyoming Arts Council supports the program developed by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. 

Winners will receive cash awards and the opportunity to compete in the State Finals. An intent to register by the school is due January 25, 2019.

ENGINEERS IN THE CLASSROOM

For the fourth straight year, professional engineers will visit Wyoming 3rd-grade classrooms during 2019 Engineers Week, February 18-22, 2019.

The engineers will lead hands-on activities that encourage students to apply their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

The University of Wyoming College of Engineering and Applied Science will send supplies to teachers in advance of the engineer's visit.

NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE CAMP

Graduating high school seniors have the opportunity to represent Wyoming at the 2019 National Youth Science Camp. 

This no-cost, month-long experience includes lectures and hands-on research projects presented by scientists from across the nation, backcountry adventure trips, and a visit to Washington D.C.

Delegates must demonstrate superior academic proficiency in mathematics and science, exhibit leadership abilities, be involved in the community and enjoy challenging themselves in the areas of biological and physical sciences.

WYOMING ACS AWARDS

The Wyoming Section of the American Chemical Society is soliciting applications for several awards and scholarships:

Entering Freshman Scholarship

Up to $1,000 to assist qualified high school graduates beginning their chemistry studies at the University of Wyoming.

Clifford C. Hach Memorial Scholarship

Directed at incoming freshmen, providing $6,000 per year. Applicants must pursue a major in the UW Chemistry Department. Transfer students with exceptional qualifications are also eligible.

Hach Scientific Foundation Chemistry Teacher Scholarship

$6,000 per year for four years directed at incoming freshmen who plan to go into teaching at the high school level. Applicants must also enter into one of the UW College of Education secondary science options that provides state certification to teach high school chemistry.

Vernon C. Bulgrin High School Chemistry Teacher Award

Recognizing outstanding high school teachers across Wyoming. Up to $500 for the teacher, and $500 for the school’s science program.


GRANTS FOR SELF-DESIGNED PD

Applications due January 23, 2019

The Fund for Teachers collaborates with the John P. Ellbogen Foundation to support Wyoming educators' efforts to develop skills, knowledge and confidence that impact student achievement. 

Teachers are invited to design a summer learning experience that will their transform classrooms by bringing out the scholar, explorer, scientist or artist in you, the teacher - and then, your students.

Individuals may request up to $5,000, and teams may request up to $10,000 for a unique and self-designed professional development learning experience.

PRESIDENTIAL INNOVATION AWARD FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATORS

Applications due May 1, 2019

The Presidential Innovation Award for Environmental Educators recognizes outstanding K-12 teachers who employ innovative approaches to environmental education and use the environment as a context for learning for their students. Up to two teachers from each of EPA's 10 regions, from different states, will be selected. Teacher awardees will receive a plaque and up to $2,500 to be used to further the recipient's professional development in environmental education.


WORLD OF 7 BILLION VIDEO CONTEST

The World of 7 Billion student video contest brings technology and creativity into your middle and high school classes.

The contest challenges students to create a short video connecting the issue of world population growth with one of three global challenges: Preserving Biodiversity, Sustainable Resource Use, or Protecting Human Rights.

Students can win up to $1,000, and participating teachers will receive free curriculum resources.

POLYMER AWARDS & GRANTS

The Intersociety Polymer Education Council (IPEC) provides two awards for excellence in polymer education: one for K-8 teachers and one for high school teachers. Award winners receive a plaque, reimbursement for expenses to attend a conference and a monetary stipend.

TEACHER RESEARCH PROGRAM

Applications due February 17, 2019

Fermilab’s Teacher Research Associates (TRAC) program provides teachers with professional summer research experiences in science, engineering or technology.

Increased teacher awareness and understanding of cutting-edge science and technology is then transferred to the classroom.

Teachers are assigned Fermilab mentors and jobs that best match their skills and interests. Selected teachers are expected to participate in all eight weeks of the program and will be reimbursed $1,040 per week.

Art Action Summit

March 4-5, 2019 Washington, D.C.

The National Arts Action Summit brings together arts advocates from across the country.

Attendees learn the latest research and legislative arts priorities and take their experiences to Capitol Hill for meetings with their congressional leaders.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC GROSVENOR FELLOWSHIPS

Wyoming is the only state that has not yet had a teacher chosen as a National Geographic Grosvenor Fellow.

The program allows select educators to be hosted aboard Lindblad Expeditions’ voyages for a life-changing, field-based experience.
