Secretary's Message Header

Dear Friends,

Transportation Secretary Mark Gottlieb and I officially dedicated the Frank Lloyd Wright Trail, which pays tribute to the brilliant architect and Wisconsin’s famous son.  The trail was created to honor his legacy and direct travelers on a 200-mile self-guided tour featuring nine of his amazing architectural wonders. The first 115 signs are up, and a second phase of signage that includes highway billboards will be completed by June 2017 in time to celebrate Wright's 150th birthday.

Last month, we received two Adrian Awards from the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI) recognizing the Travel Wisconsin Supper Club Concession Stand and digital marketing innovation on This year, Tourism earned 11 awards for its marketing efforts, bringing our total count to 83 since 2011!

In more good news, AP travel writer Beth Harpaz shared her Wisconsin discoveries with the nation and world this fall.  She published three articles and the resulting coverage was a record-breaking $19.2 million in free press. More than 150 article placements appeared in outlets like ABC News Online, Chicago Tribune, Denver Post, New York Times, Washington Post and Yahoo! News. International outlets included The China Post, Shanghai Daily News among others.

This week we launched the website for the 2017 Governor’s Conference on Tourism. I am excited to announce that actor, director and travel writer Andrew McCarthy will be our keynote speaker. I heard him speak a few years ago on the impact of travel in finding your best self and his remarks were profound and original.

From all of us at the Department of Tourism, happy holidays and cheers to a fantastic 2017!
