State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski statement after Legislative Republicans fail to act during Governor Evers’s Special Session

MADISON, Wis. — After Republicans in the State Legislature ended today's special session called by Governor Tony Evers to repeal the state’s 1849 abortion ban in a matter of seconds, State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski released the following statement:

“I am deeply disappointed, but not surprised, that Republicans chose to gavel out of today’s special session without taking any action to ensure that women can make their own healthcare choices. With the Supreme Court decision on the fate of Roe v. Wade still looming, instead of listening to the majority of Wisconsinites who support legal abortion, they decided to keep this ban on the books, make abortions criminal even in the case of rape or incest, and sentence doctors with felonies.

“I’m angry that Wisconsin Republicans continue to ignore the voices of the people of Wisconsin. It’s long past time to repeal this pre-civil war statute that criminalizes the basic rights of women. But we can’t give up the fight to protect the health, safety, and economic security of Wisconsinites and of our state.”
