MADISON — Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes today delivered the Democratic Radio Address encouraging Wisconsinites to fill out the 2020 Census before the Sep. 30, 2020 deadline at my2020Census.gov.

Hi everybody, it’s Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes, and today I want to remind you all to do something that will significantly impact the future of our state — and that’s filling out the 2020 census.

The census isn’t just a headcount—it’s about visibility, voice, and value.

Each year, the federal government uses census data to allocate more than $675 billion in federal dollars, and some of those funds come to Wisconsin.

So by responding to the census, you’re helping to make sure your hard-earned tax dollars come back to our communities to support critical investments like child care, healthcare, roads, and schools.

Census data also determines the number of congressional districts in each state to ensure people are represented fairly in our democracy.

It’s especially important that we count those who have historically been missed by the census, such as children, immigrants, people who live in rural communities, people with disabilities, and Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color.

The deadline to respond to the census was recently changed from October 31 to September 30 — which is less than two weeks from today — but the good news is that responding to the census is quick, free, easy.

Take a few moments today to go to my2020Census.gov and fill out the census online.

If we all take action now, we can strengthen our democracy and ensure our communities have the resources they need to succeed for the next decade.
