Support for President Trump’s Aggressive Actions to Secure America’s Southern Border

On Monday, I joined Steve Doocy on Fox & Friends to discuss our support for President Trump’s plan to deploy up to 4,000 National Guard members to our southern border.

Wisconsin stands ready to support our nation if called upon. Recent history shows presidents from both parties have called on members of the National Guard to specifically help fight the very real threat from those bringing illegal drugs across the southern border.

Wisconsin is Leading the Nation on Welfare Reform

Governor Walker signs nine welfare reform bills into law at the Marathon County Job Center in Wausau

Wisconsin is leading the nation on welfare reform.

Since taking office, we have built on Governor Tommy Thompson’s reforms of the 1990s, and we are focused on helping people move from government dependence to true independence through the dignity that comes from work. You see, we believe welfare should be more like a trampoline and less like a hammock.

This week, I signed our Wisconsin Works for Everyone welfare reform plan, an important part of our Ambitious Agenda for 2018. Our welfare reforms set common sense asset limits on public assistance so people with big mansions and fancy cars don’t get welfare checks while hardworking taxpayers have to pay the bills.

We prioritized the health and well-being of children and families across the state by incentivizing healthy eating in our FoodShare program and child support compliance for those receiving Medicaid. And our plan expands work requirements for public assistance programs, while providing the training and assistance people need to transition from welfare to work. So far, more than 25,000 people have gained employment through our FoodShare Employment and Training program. This is what it’s all about.

As a national leader in welfare reform, we have seen firsthand how it can create real change.

The opioid crisis is a nationwide epidemic that knows no boundaries, and Wisconsin is proudly leading the fight.

This week, I signed our 29th and 30th bills into law to combat opioid abuse here in Wisconsin. These bills reaffirm and strengthen our commitment to providing law enforcement officials, medical professionals, school districts, and community members with the funding and resources necessary to combat opioid abuse in every corner of the state.

By strengthening partnerships in our local communities, both prevention and rehabilitation are possible.

Sara’s Law: Protecting Those Who Dedicate Their Lives to Helping Families

Sara's Law

Governor Scott Walker signs Sara's Law at the Sara Quirt-Sann Memorial Courtroom in Wausau

Over a year ago, Wausau and our entire state were shocked by the tragic killings of Sara Quirt-Sann, Dianne Look, Karen Barclay, and Detective Jason Weiland.

Today, I was honored to sign Sara’s Law which makes it a Class H felony to cause or threaten bodily harm to guardians ad litem, corporation counsels, or attorneys in response to their official actions in family law proceedings.

I thank Sara’s husband Scott Sann, Representative Pat Snyder, Senator Jerry Petrowski for their leadership. Because of their efforts, there are new legal protections for those who dedicate their careers to helping others.
