As we approach the next
state budget – and beyond – our top priority for the Wisconsin is rewarding
work. This week, we introduced our Wisconsin Works For Everyone welfare reform package,
which invests in job and skills training for our unemployed and underemployed,
reduces barriers to work and increased earnings, and expands programs that
incentivize employment.
You see, we want to
empower our citizens who currently receive public assistance to move from
government dependence to true independence. Wisconsin Works for Everyone changes the way
we think about our public assistance programs. This transforms them from
simply a means of lessening financial hardship into a springboard to
self-sufficiency.
This proposal builds
upon the reforms introduced by Governor Tommy Thompson in the 1990s. His policies
put Wisconsin center stage when it came to public assistance reform, and we have
every intention of leading the nation again by helping our citizens build
better lives for themselves and their families.
We enjoy sharing all the great news about our state with you. It is an honor to serve as your Governor and represent the people of Wisconsin.
Sincerely,
Governor Scott Walker
