Women veterans represent one of the fastest-growing segments of the veteran community in Wisconsin and throughout the United States. What many people do not realize is just how unique both their experiences and challenges are. As Secretary, I am especially proud of the work our team does to address those challenges and ensure that women veterans can access the benefits they have rightfully earned.
Through thoughtful outreach across Wisconsin, we work to help women veterans feel recognized and valued. WDVA is fortunate to have Jodi Barnett serving as our Women Veterans Coordinator. Jodi is a fierce and passionate advocate who is always willing to roll up her sleeves and dive in.
Jodi has been leading our “She Is a Veteran” outreach campaign. This initiative, celebrating the contribution that Women Veterans have made and continue to make, includes over 100 Wisconsin women veterans serving as advocates, mentors, and outreach partners on behalf of their peers.
These efforts are part of WDVA’s renewed emphasis on collaboration. We are always looking to strengthen relationships with partners including the Federal VA, County and Tribal Veteran Service Offices, Campus Veteran Resource Centers, Veteran Service Organizations, and others too numerous to list. Working together, we can ensure that the 30,000 women veterans in Wisconsin receive the compassion, support, and resources they are entitled to.
If you or a woman veteran you know could benefit from the above-mentioned resources, please consider reaching out. You may contact the WDVA’s Women Veterans Coordinator at WisVetsWomen@dva.wisconsin.gov or visit our Women Veterans webpage.
Thank you for bringing attention to the unique and significant stories of women veterans in Wisconsin. We greatly appreciate your efforts.
Yours in Service,
James Bond
Secretary, Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs
March is Women's History Month, an occasion to honor and celebrate the remarkable contributions of women, with a particular focus on women veterans. This year's theme is "Moving Forward Together: Women Educating and Inspiring Generations."
Women have made significant strides in the military, breaking barriers and establishing paths for future generations. From their roles as nurses and spies during the Civil War to their current integration into combat positions, women's transformative contributions have redefined possibilities within military service. Today, women are integral members across all military branches, profoundly influencing defense, leadership, and global strategy.
In celebration of Women's History Month, WDVA takes this opportunity to honor the women veteran members of the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King and Union Grove. Their exceptional contributions are featured on the Women Veterans in The Spotlight page. These distinguished veterans continue to inspire future generations by creating new opportunities.
We are proud to celebrate the achievements of women veterans' achievements this month and throughout the year. Thank you for your continued support and recognition of their service.
