WDVA Celebrates National Volunteer Month

Volunteer photo collage April 2024

April is annually recognized as National Volunteer Month. WDVA celebrates and recognizes the significant impact volunteers have on Wisconsin's shared veteran community!

As part of WDVA's recognition of volunteers, the Veterans Homes at Chippewa Falls and Union Grove hosted banquets to honor those who generously give their time. WDVA Secretary-designee James Bond presented certificates of recognition to volunteers, including those that gave over 100 hours of their time.

We greatly appreciate the veteran service organizations and many individuals who generously donate their time at our three veteran Homes and our three veteran memorial cemeteries.

Shining a Spotlight on VORP - David Hartl

David Hartl vorp staff photo

This month, WDVA spotlights our Veteran Outreach and Recovery Program (VORP) and the efforts of David Hartl, a VORP outreach coordinator who covers Wood, Jackson, Monroe, La Crosse, Trempealeau, and Buffalo counties. David joined WDVA a few months ago to find a way he can help veterans who need a hand-up.

“My motivation to help veterans comes from a long history of working with the community. It all started when I became an Eagle Scout when I was young, to my days working as a Milwaukee Police officer,” says Hartl. “My life work was dedicated to helping the community and veterans are a big part of that. Veterans already served our country, so I believe it's time to serve them.”

David is a veteran himself, as he served in the U.S. Army from 1990 to 1998, with a deployment to Panama in 1991. He currently lives in Black River Falls on a 120-acre farm with his wife. He has two adult children, a son and a daughter. In his downtime, he enjoys hunting, fishing, riding his UTV and Harley motorcycle.

David can be reached at 608.881.9116 or David.Hartl@dva.wi.gov

More information on VORP can be found on WDVA’s website.

WDVA Secretary Bond presents Govenor's Signing Pen to Waushara County CVSO Bill Rosenau

Sec Bond and Bill Rosenau CVSO with pen from Gov Evers - April 10 2024

On April 10, WDVA Secretary-designee James Bond presented Waushara County Veterans Services Officer Bill Rosenau with one of the pens Governor Tony Evers used to sign 2023 Wisconsin Act 203. The Act eliminates an outdated civil service examination eligibility requirement for WDVA’s County Veteran Service Officer Grants, and the change to this requirement might not have happened without Bill's efforts over the last few years.
