WDVA Tribal Veteran Suicide Prevention Forum in Green Bay
WDVA Secretary Mary Kolar welcomed more than 70 participants to a special Combating Veteran Suicide prevention forum held on Thursday, August 11, at the Radisson Hotel in Green Bay.
“I am so grateful for the partnership from the leaders of Wisconsin’s 11 Tribal Nations to hold this vital forum focusing on the mental health needs of our tribal veterans in our state,” said WDVA Secretary Mary Kolar. “There is hope, and there is a strong partnership where we are all committed to addressing the unique needs of our tribal veterans who are struggling.”
The forum also featured key remarks by retired Brigadier General Joane Mathews, the Wisconsin Army National Guard's first female Native American general officer and a member of the Lac du Flambeau Nation.
This Combating Veteran Suicide forum focused specifically on providing community members, social workers, mental health providers, law enforcement, and veteran advocates with trainings and tools to help identify when a veteran needs assistance. Sessions for this forum have been designed to help attendees understand the important needs of tribal members within the veteran community.
WDVA held forums earlier this Spring in Appleton, La Crosse, Madison, Milwaukee, and Wausau with excellent turnout and engagement from veterans, nonprofits, and organizations that serve our state’s veterans.
If you or a veteran you know is in a crisis, help is available right now. Call the Veteran Suicide Crisis Line at 988, then dial 1, and get the compassionate help you need today.
