Wisconsin veterans can now directly request assistance from the Veterans Outreach and Recovery Program (VORP) on the Wisconsin Veterans Benefits Portal, www.MyWisVets.com, by filling out a brief online app.
VORP connects Wisconsin veterans to community services and provides case management and support with a special focus on treatment and recovery. Regional coordinators provide assistance and connection to mental health services, substance use treatment, financial assistance, housing and utilities, benefits assistance, and more. We encourage any veteran to reach out if you are in need of these services or if you have questions. We want to help.
We have been waiting for the day when we can be back together again, and for our members at the Wisconsin Veterans Homes, the time has come! We are excited to begin welcoming loved ones back for in-room visits. This is all possible because of the hard work, dedication, and vigilance of our staff, members, and families. It has been wonderful to hear about these long-awaited reunions between members and their loved ones and we are thrilled to be able to make this happen.
We haven’t totally defeated the virus yet and we need everyone’s help in keeping community spread low. For our veterans, please continue to take precautions against COVID-19 by staying home as much as possible, wearing a mask when out, remaining six feet away from others, frequently washing your hands, and getting vaccinated against COVID-19 if you haven’t already. Joanie Dickerson enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1980 as an “undesignated seaman,” meaning she wasn’t assigned to a specific career path. Eventually she found her niche, however, in finance. During her service, Joanie oversaw payroll and accounting and sailed the world.
After twenty years of proudly wearing the uniform, Joanie retired as a Chief Petty Officer. She left the military to spend some time with her boys – they were five and two years old at the time – and volunteer in her community, before starting her next mission: teaching.
“It was a natural fit because, in the Navy I was tasked with training new people in our career field. The last four years I was at the Naval Training Center where I was teaching sailors how to be able to go on a ship and be able to cover all aspects of our job. So, I had been working in the training and education field all along really.” Read Wisconsin Woman Veteran of the Year Joanie Dickerson's story.
