You have received this message because you are a prescriber licensed by the state of Wisconsin. If you do not prescribe controlled substances, the requirement in this message does not pertain to you.

What is the new requirement?

  • Beginning April 1, 2017, prescribers will be required to review patient records in the WI ePDMP prior to issuing most controlled substance prescription orders to their patients.
  • This requirement is for all controlled substance prescriptions unless any of the exceptions apply; the law does not provide an exception based on the schedule of the drug.
  • The exceptions to the requirement to review are: patients receiving hospice care, prescriptions intended to last the patient 3 days or less that are not subject to refill, drugs that are administered directly to the patient, emergency situations that prevent the practitioner from reviewing ePDMP records, and technological failures.

Why is the ePDMP important?

WI ePDMP Video Image

Reviewing records in the WI ePDMP provides important information about a patient’s controlled substance prescription history, including information about multiple provider episodes, high morphine milligram equivalent values, and dangerous drug combinations such as overlapping opioid and benzodiazepine prescriptions.

We encourage you to watch the short video above to hear directly from users of the ePDMP about the benefits it can offer you as a healthcare provider.

What is the ePDMP?

The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) launched the new Wisconsin Enhanced Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (WI ePDMP) on January 17, 2017The WI ePDMP is a valuable tool in the continuing fight against prescription drug misuse and abuse in WI. By providing critical information about the controlled substance prescriptions that are dispensed to patients in Wisconsin, the WI ePDMP can aid prescribers in their prescribing and treatment decisions.
